Programs and Events in May and June

Our Spring programming is coming to a close but there are a few classes still happening in May and June.

  • The Secret Family Recipe series' last installment happens May 15 with our library manager showing how to make a spectacular Pavlova dessert.
  • Tech Talk Basics and Tech Talk Drop in are on Tuesdays until June 25. Geri from Literacy for Life is ready to answer any computer questions or help update your skills in this area. Please sign up for these sessions.
  • MCG Careers is offering two sessions on June 5 & 12. If you need help with computer basics in regard to employment opportunities, these sessions will cover online applications and using Microsoft Word and Google Drive.

Bikes Back in the Library May 17th

Friday May 17th (just before the May long weekend) sees the return of our Bikes For All program. You can borrow several bicycles of various types and sizes until the end of September. If you want to cycle around town, bike Friendship Trail or head up to Kananaskis Country, we have you covered. You will need to sign a waiver before you cycle away; it will cover you for the entire season. We wish to express a huge thank you to Dave Macaulay who volunteers as our bike mechanic to keep the bicycles in fine running order.

Upcoming Summer Camps

It feels a bit hopeful to be talking about summer when we still have snow in the forecast, but nevertheless, we will be running summer day camps at the library in July, in partnership with other community groups.

Registration for these camps opens May 1. Costs and other details will be on our website as they become available. We wish to extend a huge thank you to Diamond Valley Youth Foundation and Foothills Energy Co-op for their generous donations to make these camps possible.

  • The Kananaskis Kids’ Choir Camp is from July 15-19. The session for children ages 5-9 is from 10 am to 12:15 pm and children ages 10+ will start at 1 pm-3:15 pm
    • If your child likes to sing, then this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss.  Our week-long summer program will include music education, fun games, songs and a performance at the end of the week to perform for parents. Choir director Renee Boehmer has taught music to AMAZING children (piano/voice/theory/performance) for over 35 years and has worked with many AWESOME choirs.
  • There is an Arts/Sports camp from July 26-22 for age 6-8
    • Run by the Diamond Valley Youth Foundation under the direction of Kym Wilkie. Explore the world of art in a new way. This one-of-a-kind art camp blends digital mediums, upcycling and outdoor activities for an unforgettable summer adventure.
  • We also have a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) camp from July 29-Aug 2 for children in grades 3-5.
    • The program is being run by Next Gen EduCares' Nikolas Cavalheiro Zetouni. Each day the children will experience a different type of technology such as Scratch, MakeyMakey, Lego SPIKE, Sphero Minis, Virtual Reality and Snap Circuits. The day is composed of three sessions which comprise of introducing the technology, a guided project and completing a challenge.

Library Holiday Hours

We will be closed for Victoria Day on Monday, May 20.

In the spring/summer seasons we have a long weekend almost every month, so we would like to remind readers the library is closed for only the statutory day of every long weekend from May through October. However, the library is open on Saturdays of those weekends from 10 am to 5 pm. Open/closed hours will be posted on the outside signs, our website on the event calendar, Facebook page, and phone message.
